Schodack Island State Park Castleton-on-Hudson is a 1,052-acre park located in the town of Castleton-on-Hudson, on Schodack Island in the Hudson River. The park offers scenic views of the Hudson River and the surrounding landscape, as well as an abundance of wildlife. There are three main trails that wind through the park the Lewis Trail, which is a 0.7-mile loop the Ruggles Trail, which is a 1.3-mile loop and the Diehl Trail, which is a 2.6-mile loop. There are also several connector trails that can be used to create longer loops. The park also has a playground, a picnic area, and a boat launch.
Construction of the Slater began on 20 July 1943 at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport News, Virginia. She was launched on 18 October 1944, sponsored by Mrs. Shelby L. Slater, and commissioned on 15 January 1945 with Lieutenant Commander Glynn E. Swanson in command.
Slater sailed from Norfolk, Virginia, on 10 February 1945 bound for Pearl Harbor where she arrived on 12 March to prepare for her first war patrol. Departing Pearl Harbor on 17 March, she headed eastward across the Pacific Ocean and arrived off Okinawa on 6 May. The destroyer spent the next four months conducting shore bombardments and patrols off that island chain before returning to Ulithi in early September.
Slater departed Ulithi on 21 September and headed westward across the Pacific to join Task Group 58.5 which was then operating in support of operations against Japan. The task group operated in close proximity to enemy territory for approximately two months before returning to Guam early in December 1945 to prepare for Operation "Iceberg".
The task group left Guam again late in January 1946 and steamed via Eniwetok and Yokosuka to Honshu where it joined TF
